La Gente means “The People.” Before humans were in the Sonoran Desert, the saguaros stood tall, growing slowly and surely. They were the first people. In my piece, they serve as a metaphor for the Mexican community that has created a place for themselves in the desert. We have stood together, growing tough skin, reaching out our arms to each other in the face of discrimination, deportations, and injustice.
